Water and Agriculture — The Key to Malawi’s Economic Future

Agriculture is the backbone of Malawi’s economy, employing over 80% of the country’s population and contributing nearly 30% to its GDP. However, like many other African nations, Malawi faces a serious challenge: unpredictable rainfall and limited access to reliable irrigation infrastructure. These obstacles severely affect crop yields and make farming vulnerable to climate variability.

To address this challenge, the Government of Malawi, through the Ministry of Agriculture, launched a key initiative — the Malawi Irrigation Project. The project's primary goal is to improve water management in the southern region, boost agricultural output, and create sustainable employment opportunities for local communities.
