Shock! Gate valves can't be used like this!

2022-06-16

If you want to make the flow of the pipeline smaller, can you adjust the flow of the pipeline by closing the opening of the valve?

The answer is no! Gate valves are generally not used for flow regulation, but only for cutting off. If the design needs to have a regulating function, it is recommended not to choose a gate valve, but to use a special regulating valve to regulate the flow.

Gate valve installation

According to the standard, gate valves are forbidden to be used for pipeline flow regulation, and most of them are fully open or fully closed in the normal process flow. Especially in the key of medium and high pressure or bad scour, it is forbidden to use the gate valve to adjust the flow. For example, when adjusting the flow of medium and high pressure pipelines, the pressure difference between the front and rear can easily cause vibration of the gate, and erosion of the gate and sealing surface. For example, if it is used for adjustment in a working condition with greater wear, the service life of the gate valve will be shortened, and the sealing surface and the gate will often be worn through.

In contrast, the flow rate of the globe valve is much better than that of the gate valve. Generally, the bypass valve of the instrument control valve is equipped with a stop valve, because the stop valve can regulate the flow better.
